Special traffic and transport arrangements for public processions on Hong Kong Island on May 1

     The Transport Department (TD) today (April 27) reminded the public that special traffic and transport arrangements would be implemented from Causeway Bay to Central District on May 1 (Tuesday) to facilitate the holding of a number of public processions on Hong Kong Island that day.

     Five public processions will be held on May 1.  The special traffic and transport arrangements are as follows:

I. Public procession from Southorn Playground to Central Government Offices in Tamar at about 10.30am:

     The procession will depart from Southorn Playground for the destination at Central Government Offices in Tamar, via Hennessy Road westbound, Queensway westbound, footbridge connecting Pacific Place and Queensway Plaza, Queensway Plaza, United Centre, and footbridge connecting United Centre and CITIC Tower.

     The Police will implement intermittent closure of some traffic lanes along the procession route for the smooth conduct of the event.

II. Public procession from Chater Road Pedestrian Precinct to Rodney Street in Admiralty at about 11.30am:

     The procession will depart from Chater Road Pedestrian Precinct for the destination at Rodney Street in Admiralty, via Chater Road, Chater Garden, Queensway eastbound and the northern pavement of Queensway.

     The Police will implement intermittent closure of some traffic lanes along the procession route for the smooth conduct of the event.

III. Public procession from Southorn Playground to the Central Government Offices in Tamar at about 11.30am:

     The procession will depart from Southorn Playground for the destination at Central Government Offices in Tamar, via Hennessy Road eastbound, Fleming Road northbound, Fleming Road flyover northbound, Harbour Road westbound, Fenwick Pier Street westbound, Lung Wui Road westbound and Tim Mei Avenue southbound.

     The special traffic and transport arrangements will mainly include:

Road closure
------------

     The following roads will be closed from about 11.15am:

1. The section of Luard Road northbound between Johnston Road and Hennessy Road will be intermittently closed;
2. The section of Hennessy Road eastbound between Luard Road and Fleming Road;
3. The section of Fleming Road northbound between Hennessy Road and Lockhart Road;
4. Fleming Road flyover; and
5. Harbour Road westbound, Fenwick Pier Street westbound and Lung Wui Road westbound will be intermittently closed.

Public transport services
-------------------------

     A total of 18 bus routes operating in the affected areas will be temporarily diverted.  Expo Drive East Bus Terminus and Wan Chai Ferry Pier Bus Terminus will also be temporarily suspended until the related closed roads are re-opened.  The concerned public transport operators will arrange publicity to inform passengers of the temporary arrangements.

IV. Public procession from East Point Road Pedestrian Precinct to Victoria Park at about 1pm:

     The procession will depart from East Point Road Pedestrian Precinct for the destination at Victoria Park, via Yee Wo Street eastbound, Regal Hong Kong Hotel crossing, across Irving Street, western pavement of Leighton Road, Keswick Street, Pennington Street northbound, across Yee Wo Street, Sugar Street eastbound and across Gloucester Road.

     The Police will implement intermittent closure of some traffic lanes along the procession route for the smooth conduct of the event.

V. Public procession from Victoria Park to the Central Government Offices in Tamar at about 2.30pm:

     The procession will depart from Victoria Park for the destination at Central Government Offices in Tamar, via Sugar Street, Yee Wo Street westbound, Hennessy Road westbound, Queensway westbound, across Queensway eastbound, Rodney Street, Harcourt Road westbound, Harcourt Road eastbound and Tim Mei Avenue northbound.

     The special traffic and transport arrangements will mainly include:

Road closure

Phase I

     The following roads will be closed from about 2pm:

1. The section of U-turn slip road between Gloucester Road southbound and northbound;
2. Sugar Street;
3. Irving Street (except vehicles heading for Regal Hong Kong Hotel);
4. Jardine's Bazaar;
5. Tang Lung Street; and
6. The section of Canal Road East between Hennessy Road and Russell Street.
 
Phase II

     The following roads will be closed from about 2.30pm:

1. The section of Gloucester Road southbound between Victoria Park Road flyover and Causeway Road (if necessary);
2. The section of Yee Wo Street westbound between Pennington Street and Hennessy Road;
3. The section of Yun Ping Road between Kai Chiu Road and Pak Sha Road;
4. Kai Chiu Road;
5. The section of Lee Garden Road between Kai Chiu Road and Hennessy Road;
6. The section of Hennessy Road westbound between Yee Wo Street and Lee Garden Road;
7. The section of Canal Road West between Sharp Street West and Hennessy Road;
8. The section of Wan Chai Road between Canal Road West and Morrison Hill Road;
9. The section of Bowrington Road between Sharp Street West and Hennessy Road;
10. Hennessy Road westbound west of Lee Garden Road and Queensway will be intermittently closed;
11. The slip road leading from Johnston Road eastbound onto Hennessy Road westbound;
12. Rodney Street;
13. The section of Harcourt Road westbound between the exit of Harcourt Garden car park and Tamar Street;
14. The section of the fast lane of Harcourt Road westbound between Tamar Street and Cotton Tree Drive;
15. The section of Harcourt Road eastbound between Tim Wa Avenue and Tim Mei Avenue;
16. Tim Wa Avenue southbound (except vehicles heading for Chief Executive's Office and Central Government Offices car park);
17. The fast lane of Garden Road flyover; and
18. The section of Edinburgh Place southbound between Lung Wo Road and Connaught Road Central.

Public transport services
-------------------------

     A total of 70 bus routes and five green minibus routes operating in the affected areas will be temporarily diverted.  Admiralty (East) Public Transport Interchange will also be temporarily suspended until the related closed roads are re-opened.  The concerned public transport operators will arrange publicity to inform passengers of the temporary arrangements.

     Due to extensive road closures, the TD anticipates that the traffic from Causeway Bay to Central will be very congested on May 1.  Motorists are advised to avoid driving to the affected areas.  In case of traffic congestion, motorists should exercise tolerance and patience, and follow the instructions of the Police.  People who plan to go to the affected areas are advised to use public transport.

     The TD and the Police will closely monitor the traffic situation and implement appropriate measures whenever necessary.  Motorists and the public are advised to be alert to the latest traffic news on TV and radio.
