The University Grants Committee (UGC) has been supporting institutions' hostel construction projects over the years, including lobbying for land and funding to meet the demand for hostel places by institutions under the existing government policy. The number of publicly-funded hostel places in the sector will increase by some 6,600 in 2011 and 2012.
The UGC understands that the demand for student hostel places is very keen at Hong Kong Baptist University, and estimates that the shortfall will increase to some 1,300 places in the 2014/15 academic year.
The UGC will continue to support institutions' initiatives in constructing student hostels, including identifying new sites and seeking necessary funding.
