Update on Respiratory Syncytial Virus case in male severe mentally handicapped ward in Siu Lam Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding the announcement yesterday on a number of patients with Respiratory Syncytial Virus in a male severe mentally handicapped ward, the spokesperson for Siu Lam Hospital made the following update today (April 19):

     Two more male patients (aged 19 and 67) in the ward had presented with respiratory symptoms. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and their test results were positive for Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The patients have been transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment under isolation and are in stable condition.

     Admission to and discharge from the ward have been suspended. Restricted visiting to the ward has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
