Territory-wide campaign to promote safe driving
***********************************************

Police have concluded a territory-wide campaign yesterday (April 17) to remind drivers of public service vehicles (PSV) and goods vehicles of the importance of safe driving. The campaign also echoed with the Road Traffic (Amendment) Ordinance 2012, which became effective on April 13, aimed at enhancing the safety of Public Light Buses (PLB) operation.

Conducted between April 11 and 17, the campaign was one of the ongoing road safety series conducted by the Police. Apart from publicity and education, enforcement actions were taken with a view to reducing moving traffic offences.

The campaign resulted in the issue of 83 verbal warnings, 460 summonses, 3 254 fixed penalty tickets and the arrest of seven drivers for drink driving offences.

Among the 3 714 summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued, 1 039 were issued for speeding, 403 for mobile phone offences, 381 for seatbelt offence and 145 for failing to comply with traffic light signals.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited over 250 locations throughout the territory and distributed over 18 000 leaflets to drivers of PSV, goods vehicles and members of the public.

Members of the public are encouraged to report undesirable driving behaviour to the Police or to the Transport Complaints Unit of the Transport Advisory Committee.  PLB passengers are encouraged to report improper driving behaviour of PLB drivers to the Project Safe-Ride hotline 2754 7668.

¡§The campaign is aimed at enhancing public awareness of road safety and reducing traffic accidents¡¨, a Police spokesman said.
