Respiratory Syncytial Virus case in male severe mentally handicapped ward in Siu Lam Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Siu Lam Hospital (SLH) made the following announcement today (April 18):

     Four patients (aged 22 to 57) in a male severe mentally handicapped ward had presented with respiratory symptoms since April 12. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients. Test results for two patients were positive for Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The four patients have been transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment under isolation and are in stable condition.

     In addition, three patients (aged 24 to 47) in the same ward had presented with diarrhoea or vomiting symptoms since April 16. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients. Test results for two patients were positive for Norovirus. The patients have been transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment under isolation and are in stable condition.

     Admission to and discharge from the ward have been suspended. Restricted visiting to the ward has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
