Hong Kong local Chinese music troupe Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble will stage its "New Horizons" concerts in May. Well-known xiao and dizi player, xiao maker and multimedia artist Tam Po-shek and guzheng performer Luo Jing have been invited to collaborate with the troupe to create an exciting crossover of tradition and innovation. (Tam will perform on May 6 only.)
Different programmes are included in two performances. The first performance (on May 6) will feature "A New Tune of Sizhu Music", "Song of the Bamboo", "Nocturne to the Victoria Harbour", "Listening to the Wind Singing under the Bright Moonlight", "Moon on the Great Wall", "Capriccio on the Theme from Song of the Homebound Fishermen", "Autumn Moon over a Placid Lake", "The Moon in Fall" and "Three Variations on Yangguan". Tam will perform xiao, speech, calligraphy and painting with the song "Three Variations on Yangguan". The audience will be able to enjoy the multifaceted approaches to the artistic mood and meaning of the musical works. The second performance (on May 12) will include some of the songs from the first performance as well as "The Courtyard After the Rain", "Nostalgia for the Central Plains", "The Fragrance of Jasmine", "The Moon Rises High" and "Monologue: Impression on Reading the Poem Pipa Xin".
The Windpipe Chinese Ensemble was founded with the mission of promoting the musical culture of China and Hong Kong. In addition to researching and studying traditional Chinese folk music, the ensemble dedicates itself to exploring the unique charms and styles of Chinese ensemble music. The ensemble holds regular music activities including concerts, workshops, music camps, master classes, talks and cultural gatherings. The group also hosts musical exhibitions, featuring various instruments performed by Chinese virtuosi and young musicians from Hong Kong, in a bid to introduce Chinese music's traditional and modern repertoire to the public, covering dizi music, Guangdong music culture and original compositions by local composers.
The concerts "New Horizons" by Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will be staged at 8pm on May 6 (Sunday) at the Theatre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre, and at 8pm on May 12 (Saturday) at the Cultural Activities Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Tickets priced from $120 to $160 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
