The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra and its principal guest conductor Jimmy Chiang will collaborate with guest conductor and pianist Robert Lehrbaumer for two concerts in May.
The concerts will take place at 8pm on May 18 (Friday) at the Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall, and at 8pm on May 19 (Saturday) at the Auditorium, Tuen Mun Town Hall. The orchestra will perform the world premiere of Dr Yip Wai-hong's "Storms on the South China Sea". Chiang and Lehrbaumer will also conduct each other and play Liszt's "Piano Concerto No.1 in E-flat" and Brahms' "Piano Concerto No.1 in D Minor" respectively.
Winner of the first prize at the 4th International Competition for Young Conductors Lovro von Matacic in Zagreb, Croatia, Jimmy Chiang began his musical education on the piano at the age of 4 before going on to study composition and the violoncello. He received a Fellowship Diploma from the UK's Trinity College London, a Bachelor of Music degree from Baylor University in the US and a "Magister Artium" with distinction from the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria, where he was the last student of the renowned Austrian conductor and Mozart interpreter Leopold Hager. In 2003, on the invitation of Seiji Ozawa, Chiang was one of three Fellow Conductors at the Rohm Music Festival in Kyoto, Japan, where he studied with the master himself.
Born in Vienna, Robert Lehrbaumer had his first appearance as a soloist with orchestras at the age of 11 and has since performed at many concerts as a soloist or as a conductor or both. Concert tours have taken him all over the world. When conducting orchestras, Lehrbaumer often performs as both conductor and pianist/organist. He has won numerous competitions and specialises in performing the repertoire of Schubert and the Viennese "Klassik" as well as works of the late romantic period.
The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra aims to bring music to a wider audience in Hong Kong, especially the younger generation. The orchestra has performed frequently with a number of internationally famous conductors and soloists in Hong Kong for more than 30 years. By performing popular music and organising concert talks, the orchestra has been successful in introducing classical music and Chinese orchestral music to the public.
The concerts by the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets ranging from $80 to $160 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for group bookings.
