Appointments to Council on Human Reproductive Technology

     The Government today (March 30) announced the re-appointment of Mr Gregory Leung Wing-lup as the Chairperson of the Council on Human Reproductive Technology with effect from April 11, 2012, for a term of three years.

     Meanwhile, the re-appointments of 12 serving members and the appointments of six new members, namely Ms Kam Yim-mui, Professor Alex Kwan Yui-huen, Mr Stephen Leung Kwok-keung, Dr Leung Tse-ngong, Professor Lo Ping-cheung and Dr Lawrence Tang Chang-hung, were also announced.

     All appointments will take effect from April 11, 2012. Details are as follows:

     The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, welcomed the new members. He also expressed gratitude to the outgoing members, Professor Alfred Chan Cheung-ming, Dr Polly Cheung Suk-yee, Professor Terence Lao Tzu-hsi, Mr Douglas Lee Kar-yan, Professor Li Hon-lam and Dr Leslie Lo Siu-fai, for their invaluable contributions and unfailing support to the Council during their term of office. They will retire from the Council with effect from April 10.

     Established in 2001 under the Human Reproductive Technology Ordinance, the Council on Human Reproductive Technology was tasked with regulating the conduct of reproductive technology including embryo research in Hong Kong through a licensing system and the publication of a Code of Practice for the relevant professions.

     Under section 4(2) of the Ordinance, the Council consists of 26 members from a wide variety of disciplines, including medical specialists, legal professionals, social workers, scholars in philosophy and ethics, psychologists, sociologists, local community leaders and government representatives.
