Correctional staff prevent smuggling of dangerous drugs

     Officers of the Correctional Services Department (CSD) today (March 18) found suspected dangerous drugs concealed in the body of an inmate remanded in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre and rapidly prevented smuggling of dangerous drugs into the centre.

     The man, aged 42, was admitted to the centre on March 17 for the offences of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

     Acting on intelligence and under security check at about 9.30am this morning, officers found that he had discharged a total of eight rolls of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped in plastic.

     The CSD spokesperson said, "The department takes every measure, including an effective intelligence mechanism, to prevent the smuggling of dangerous drugs into correctional institutions and to eradicate their presence there. We are committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

     The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

     As at today, there have been 41 seizures of dangerous drugs this year. Most seizures were made in reception centres.
