Statement by Chairman (Designate) of the Communications Authority
********************************************************

Following is the statement made by the Chairman (Designate) of the Communications Authority, Mr Ambrose Ho, on his appointment today (March 16):

I am pleased to accept the appointment as the Chairman of the Communications Authority (CA).

The CA to be established on April 1 will carry out the functions currently performed by the Telecommunications Authority and the Broadcasting Authority in regulating the telecommunications and broadcasting services in Hong Kong. The CA will adhere to the principle of fairness and impartiality in dealing with matters concerning the industry and handling complaints.

With rapid advancement in technology, the traditional boundaries between the telecommunications and broadcasting services have become blurred, leading to a convergence of the two markets. As a unified regulator, the CA is committed to updating and rationalising the existing regulatory regime so as to keep pace with the changes in these sectors and foster a favourable environment for the development of the communications industry. We will strive to maintain fair competition and encourage industry participants to adopt advanced technologies and provide diversified communications services to the public.

I and all members (designate) of the CA are looking forward to working closely with the industry to achieve these objectives.
