Over 900 young musicians from bands, orchestras and a choir under the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will jointly present a selection of all-time favourites from East and West at four concerts to be held next month. Audiences attending the programme will be able to enjoy fabulous Chinese and Western orchestral works performed by 14 music groups.
The first concert, from the Music Office Children's Chinese Orchestra, Island Youth Chinese Orchestra, Kowloon Youth Chinese Orchestra and New Territories Youth Chinese Orchestra, will be held at 3pm on April 1 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Tuen Mun Town Hall. Contemporary Chinese orchestral works to be performed will include "Marching to the Promising Future" by Liu Tianhua and arranged by Peng Xiuwen, Kuan Nai-chung's "Praying for Rain", Lai Bing-shing's "The Boisterous Festivities by Rui-Li River", Loo Leung-fai's "Memory of the Childhood", Wang Huiran's "Dance of the Yi's" and the Jiangnan sizhu music "Song of Joy".
The second concert, to be performed by the Island Youth Strings, Kowloon Youth Strings, New Territories Youth Strings and Hong Kong Youth Strings, will be held at 3pm on April 4 (Wednesday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall. An array of string works will be showcased, including "Highlights from Peer Gynt, 1st, 2nd and 5th movements" by Grieg and arranged by Hoffman, Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, K. 525", Mendelssohn's "Sinfonia No. 7 in D minor for String Orchestra, 1st movement", Warlock's "Capriol Suite, 1st, 5th and 6th movements", Copland's "Hoedown, from the Rodeo" and Urrows' "Sarabande, from A Midsummer Night's Dream".
The other two joint concerts will be held at 8pm on April 21 (Saturday) at the Auditorium of Yuen Long Theatre and the Auditorium of Kwai Tsing Theatre. The third concert will be performed by the Music Office Junior Chinese Orchestra, Hong Kong Junior Chamber Ensemble and Hong Kong Children's Symphonic Band. Programme highlights include Xu Jingxin and Chen Dawei's "Flying Apsaras", Bach's "Symphony No. 3 in C Major for String Orchestra and Basso Continuo, Wq. 182/3" and Barnes' "Appalachian Overture".
The last concert, by the New Territories Youth Symphonic Band, Kowloon Youth Symphonic Band and the Music Office Children's Choir, will showcase works such as Hess' "Global Variations", "Jalousie" by Gade and arranged by Krance, and Lawrence's "Concerto for Singing Chickens and Piano".
Tickets priced at $60, $40 and $20 for the first two concerts are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Tickets for the last two concerts will be available from March 21 onwards. Half-price concessions are available for full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 and above, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
