Cluster of Respiratory Syncytial Virus cases in Queen Mary Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Queen Mary Hospital made the following announcement today (March 14):

     Five paediatric patients (aged 2 months to 2 years) in a paediatric surgery ward have presented with symptoms of fever, cough and runny nose since March 5. Nasopharyngeal aspirate tests have been conducted and results were positive for Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The patients are now being treated under isolation. One of the patients has recovered and was discharged, while the remaining four are in a stable condition. The parents of the patients have been informed of the situation.

     Infection control measures have been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
