Celebrated Borodin Quartet to perform all-Russian programme
***********************************************************

A concert by the renowned Borodin Quartet, one of the programmes celebrating Hong Kong City Hall's 50th anniversary, will be staged in April.

Founded in 1945, the Borodin Quartet is widely celebrated for its authority in the string quartet repertoire. Revered for its performances of Beethoven and Shostakovich, the quartet is equally at home playing Mozart or Stravinsky. The ensemble frequently performs to wide acclaim at major venues throughout the world.

The current members of the quartet are Sergey Lomovsky (violin), Ruben Aharonian (violin), Igor Naidin (viola) and Vladimir Balshin (cello). The programme for the Hong Kong concert features Tchaikovsky's "String Quartet No. 2 in F" and Shostakovich's "Piano Quintet in G Minor". The Borodin Quartet will be joined by Russian pianist Ludmila Berlinskaya for Shostakovich's piano quintet.

The Borodin Quartet boasts an impressive discography. Their first release on the Onyx label, featuring Borodin, Schubert, Webern and Rachmaninov, was nominated for a Grammy in the 2005 "Best Chamber Performance" category. The quartet has also recorded for EMI, RCA and Teldec. Their Tchaikovsky disc was honoured with a Gramophone Award in 1994. Chandos released the complete Beethoven quartets as part of the group's 60th anniversary celebration.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert by Borodin Quartet will be staged at 8pm on April 25 (Wednesday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall.
