The following is issued on behalf of the Women's Commission:

The Women's Commission (WoC) hosted a cocktail reception today (March 8) to celebrate International Women's Day (IWD) 2012 with women's groups and different stakeholders in the community.

Speaking at the reception, the Chairperson of the WoC, Mrs Stella Lau, said that women's groups have made tremendous efforts to advance the development of women in Hong Kong.

Mrs Lau said, "We are also committed to empowering women. The Capacity Building Mileage Programme is one of the flagship initiatives initiated by the Commission to this end. Since its launch in 2004, the programme has been effective in encouraging women of different backgrounds and educational levels to pursue life-long learning and equip them with a positive mindset. The Government has made the programme a recurrent item in the next financial year to support the learning needs of women."

Mrs Lau thanked various sectors of the community for the support and encouragement they rendered to the Commission. She hoped that they would continue to work together to enhance the interests and well-being of women.

In celebration of IWD, a roving exhibition introducing services for women provided by women's groups was launched by Mrs Lau and other officiating guests at the event.

Officiating at the reception, the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Stephen Lam, said that the Women's Commission and women's groups play an instrumental role in realising the advancement of women in Hong Kong.

"The Government will continue to work closely with all concerned for the further enhancement of women's position in Hong Kong," he said.

Also officiating at the reception were the Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Ms Guo Li; the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung; the Permanent Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Paul Tang; the wife of the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Florence Lam; and the Director of Social Welfare, Mr Patrick Nip.
