Hong Kong Customs seizes methamphetamine at airport (with photos)

     Customs officers today (March 1) intercepted at the restricted departure area of Hong Kong International Airport two male passengers departing for Tokyo, Japan and seized about 2.5 kilogrammes of methamphetamine ("Ice"). The drugs were concealed inside false compartments of their checked-in suitcases with an estimated market value of about HK$1.9 million.

     The arrestees, aged 39 and 51, claimed to be clerk and laundry worker respectively. They will each be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court tomorrow (March 2).

     Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
