Lui Pui-yuen and friends to showcase Chinese music classics
***********************************************************

In celebration of Hong Kong City Hall's 50th anniversary, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present the Chinese instrumental concert "Lui Pui-yuen and Friends" in April, featuring famed forerunners of Chinese music in Hong Kong.

The concert will feature Lui and his old friends from the local Chinese music circle, Yu Lun, Chen Ching-chee, Kwan Lun-kwong and the Hong Kong Arts Society, for a performance that will take avid and faithful enthusiasts of Chinese music down memory lane. Timed to coincide with the celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hong Kong City Hall, the programme will include such timeless favourites as "Prelude" and "Bow Dance" from "The Dagger Society", as well as "Dance of the Yao Tribe", "Days of Joy", "Tune of Purple Bamboo", "Flowery Moon Light of Spring River" and more. As they listen to these familiar, lilting tunes, patrons will be able to visualise their past days as well as those of the generations before them. Half a century has passed since maestro Lui and his friends first shared the stage together, and through this show they intend to bring out the warm tones of cherished memories.

Lui Pui-yuen is known for his virtuosity - not only in pipa and guqin but also in many other types of Chinese string and wind instrument. His style, a fine blend of strength and delicateness, exemplifies both the traditional techniques of Jiangnan string and wind music and the new fingering of pipa of the last decade or so. As one of its pioneers Lui is an esteemed figure in the Hong Kong Chinese music circle, as well as being recognised for his seminal influence on the genre. He founded the Chinese National Music Troupe in 1961, and over the past 20 years has trained numerous musicians and discovered many new talents in Hong Kong. He has also been instrumental in bringing the Chinese music section to the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Lui is now settled in the United States and has taught at many music institutions there. He has given highly acclaimed concerts in many cities in North America and Asia.

The Chinese instrumental concert "Lui Pui-yuen and Friends" will be staged at 8pm on April 7 (Saturday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall.
