February 2012 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (February 20) the February 2012 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

     In this issue, three feature articles entitled "The Situation of the Four Key Industries in the Hong Kong Economy in 2010", "An Overview of the Public Library Services in Hong Kong" and "Hong Kong Harmonised System 2012 Edition" are included.

"The Situation of the Four Key Industries in the Hong Kong Economy in 2010"

     Financial services, trading and logistics, tourism, and producer and professional services are the Four Key Industries in the Hong Kong economy.  They have been the driving force of Hong Kong's economic growth, providing impetus to growth of other sectors and creating employment.

     A feature article analysing the economic contribution and employment situation in 2009 in respect of the Four Key Industries was published in the April 2011 issue of the HKMDS.  This feature article is an updated version of the article published in April 2011, with figures on the Four Key Industries for 2010 incorporated.

"An Overview of the Public Library Services in Hong Kong"

     Libraries provide a gateway to the world of knowledge.  In Hong Kong, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) is responsible for the provision of public library services.  This feature article gives an overview of the provision, utilisation and latest developments of the public library services in Hong Kong.

"Hong Kong Harmonised System 2012 Edition"

     Hong Kong Harmonised System (HKHS), used principally for import and export declaration purpose, has undergone major updating since January 1, 2012.  Import/export declarations for shipments on or after January 1, 2012 must be completed using commodity codes and units of quantity in accordance with the 2012 Edition of the HKHS.  This feature article briefly discusses the amendments made in the 2012 Edition of the HKHS.

     Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population; labour; external trade; business performance; housing and property; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; national income and Balance of Payments; prices; and energy.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.  Users can download the Digest free of charge at the website of C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/statistical_report/general_statistical_digest/index_cd_B1010002_dt_detail.jsp).
