Renowned Cantonese opera actors to pay tribute to virtuosos

     In celebration of Hong Kong City Hall's 50th anniversary and Tuen Mun Town Hall's 25th anniversary, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present the operatic showcase "Famous Repertory of Six Famous Stars in Cantonese Opera" in April. Audiences attending the programme will witness a magical stage show, which will see renowned contemporary actors Wan Fei-yin, Yau Sing-po, Ng Chin-fung, Yuen Siu-fai, Ng Mei-ying, Lam Kam-tong, Lee Lung, Nam Fung, Chan Wing-yee, Koi Ming-fai, Lung Koon-tin, etc, revive prized works by six leading names in Cantonese opera.

     During the 1950s, Hong Kong witnessed a golden age of traditional Cantonese opera, with many actors in lead roles (known as "wenwusheng") commanding the scene. Notable names included Yam Kim-fai, Ho Fei-fan, Lam Kar-sing, Mak Bing-wing, Chan Kam-tong and Sun Ma Sze-tsang. By creating classics in their repertoires and cutting a distinct profile as virtuosos, they became icons of Cantonese opera. This series pays tribute to that golden era. Details are as follows:

     Lyrics and dialogue in all shows will be supplemented with Chinese and English surtitles. All shows start at 7.30pm. Tickets priced from $100 to $340 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by Credit Card Telephone Booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients.
