Results of 2011 Healthy Mobile Phone/Tablet Apps Nomination Activity and other contests announced

     The Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority (TELA) today (February 18) announced the results of the 2011 Healthy Mobile Phone/Tablet Apps Nomination Activity, the 2011 Meritorious Websites Contest and the 3rd Healthy Internet Video Contest.

     To encourage the use of apps with healthy, practical and educational content with a view to promoting the "Healthy Information, Healthy Mind" culture and protecting youngsters from the influence of objectionable apps, TELA launched 2011 Healthy Mobile Phone/Tablet Apps Nomination Activity, being held for the first time. During the nomination period, more than 700 nominations involving a total of 335 apps were received. After considering various factors such as promoting the development of a healthy mind, educational value, practical value, creativity and value for money, the judging panel selected the following 10 winning apps, which cover a wide range of different areas:

     The winners of the 2011 Meritorious Websites Contest are as follows:

     The Meritorious Websites Contest has entered its 12th year. With the theme "Surf smartly and spend time wisely", it aims to encourage young people to browse websites with healthy content and recognises the contributions of the healthy websites' producers. It attracts nearly 20 000 students to cast their votes every year. For the 2011 contest, the adjudication panel has selected 10 meritorious websites from more than 100 nominations. These websites are rich in content and cover a wide range of topics including traditional Chinese culture, natural science, youth information, and scientific and medical knowledge.

     Members of the public may browse the website www.merit.gov.hk for details of the winning websites and apps.

     The 3rd Healthy Internet Video Contest is co-organised by TELA, the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. Through encouraging the production and viewing of short Internet videos, the programme aims to encourage healthy and responsible online behaviour among young people and to guard them against objectionable information.

     The winning entries selected by an adjudication panel are as follows:

"Appalling Network of the 21st Century" (translation only)

     The 3rd Healthy Internet Video Contest has been well-received, with a total of 92 entries (including 61 school entries and 31 public entries) contesting for the awards of Best Video, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor/Actress and Best Visual Effects. Lasting for two to five minutes, the competing videos pinpoint the adverse impacts of harmful information on young people and highlight the importance of using the Internet in a healthy way.
