Update on cluster of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus cases in Prince of Wales Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding the announcement earlier that some babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Special Care Baby Unit tested positive for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the spokesperson for Prince of Wales Hospital made the following update today (February 17):

     In accordance with the prevailing guidelines, screening of patients in the respective wards has been performed. One more baby boy, aged seven days, was confirmed today to be an MRSA carrier without clinical symptoms. He is now being treated under isolation and is in stable condition.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection. The hospital has enhanced infection control measures and will continue to closely monitor the situation.
