The Public Libraries Advisory Committee (PLAC), led by its Chairman, Professor John Leong and the Vice-chairman, Mr Cheung Chi-kong, today (February 15) visited Sha Tin Public Library to gain a better understanding of the new library computer facilities. The PLAC members were briefed on the new system by the Assistant Director (Libraries and Development) of the Leisure and Cultural Services, Mr Lee Yuk-man, and also witnessed a demonstration of the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) System.
The new library computer system, the Next Generation Integrated Library System (NGILS), was successfully launched at the end of 2011 to provide enhanced public library services. Online searching of the library catalogue is now more efficient, interactive and closer to the prevailing international online search format.
Under the NGILS, the Library Catalogue has been given a new interface with a user-friendly function and more search options and features. New details include the image of a book cover, the listing of book summaries and title information.
Readers can save their personal favourite book list or share catalogue content on the social network, browse library information at any time or any place, and keep a record of their loan history in personal accounts for their future reference. They can also log in to their accounts and use the new Library Catalogue for reservation and renewal of library materials, or register for the email notification service to receive a due-date email reminder to avoid becoming overdue on borrowed items.
A pilot scheme to help introduce the RFID technology has been launched alongside the new computer system in six selected libraries, including the major libraries at Sha Tin and City Hall, district libraries at Lockhart Road and Lai Chi Kok, and the small libraries at Shun Lee Estate and Tin Shui Wai North. The pilot test covers the application of RFID-enabled self-charging terminals, self-returning stations and book sorter systems.
The Sha Tin Public Library is also conducting a pilot test on a 24-hour self-returning service for readers to return loan materials at any time.
