Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding the announcement earlier that there were in-patients confirmed to be Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers, the spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital made the following update today (February 15):

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, screening of contacts has been performed. One 91-year-old female patient was confirmed today as a VRE carrier during contact tracing, without clinical symptoms, and is in stable condition. While awaiting the laboratory test result, the patient concerned was put under isolation and enhanced infection control measures were implemented.

     The hospital will continue close monitoring of the situation. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
