The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has announced that the consultation period on the mechanism for cancellation of hawker licences would be extended to end on March 31.
A spokesman for the FEHD said today (February 9) that the extension of the consultation period was to tie in with the meeting arrangements of the new term of the District Councils. During the course of the consultation, there were views requesting for more time to be given to the stakeholders to deliberate on the proposals and to collate views for submission to the Government.
The consultation was originally scheduled to close on February 12.
The FEHD launched the consultation exercise proposing the introduction of a mechanism for cancellation of hawker licences in December last year. It is one of the measures to improve hawker management and to achieve a greater deterrent effect for enforcement actions.
According to the proposed mechanism, if a licensed hawker is convicted six times within three months for breaching the relevant regulations of the Hawker Regulation (Cap 132AI), the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene (DFEH) may consider cancelling the hawker licence.
The DFEH may consider immediate cancellation of the hawker licence if the licensee has committed any serious offences including stall subletting, illegal connection of electricity and providing false information to obtain a hawker licence. If the licensee is dissatisfied with the cancellation of licence, he may make representation or appeal through various channels.
