The Home Affairs Bureau today (February 7) announced the results of applications for the 2011 Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme. A total of 18 successful applications, nine for Springboard Grants and nine for Project Grants, will be funded under the Scheme.
Speaking at the announcement ceremony today, the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Raymond Young, said, "The response of the arts sector to the Funding Scheme is good. We have received a total of 98 applications. As the required amount of funding for worthwhile applications exceeds the original provision of $30 million, we have allocated an extra $9 million for this round of the funding exercise, enabling more quality applications to be funded.
"Springboard Grants, which provide funding support for arts groups on a matching basis, are new to the arts sector. We aim to cultivate a supportive culture for the arts and provide incentives for the arts groups to explore different sources of funding so that they may operate in a more financially self-sufficient and sustainable manner in future. I appeal to the community to lend your support to the development of the arts and culture," Mr Young said.
The Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Arts Development, Dr Chung Shui-ming, said, "The successful applications cover a wide range of art forms, including music, dance, drama, visual arts, arts administration, arts education and multi-disciplinary arts. The successful applicants have demonstrated their strengths in contents development, audience building, arts education and capacity development. The Committee hopes that with the funding support, these groups would be able to launch their initiatives smoothly and write a new chapter in local arts and cultural development."

The Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme is a new funding scheme launched by the Home Affairs Bureau last June, with the Advisory Committee on Arts Development giving advice and conducting assessments on applications. Under the Scheme, there are Springboard Grants, with matching elements, as well as Project Grants. The Funding Scheme aims to enhance capacity development of local arts practitioners and arts groups. It also seeks to encourage the community and the private sector to support and sponsor arts and cultural initiatives, opening up new funding avenues for activities/projects of a large scale and/or of a long time frame and providing new funding opportunities for initiatives to enhance overall capacity development.
