Applications invited for 9th Hong Kong Literature Festival pre-festival competitions
***********************************************************

Even in the era of the Internet and hi-tech communication, writing is still an effective and touching means of communicating. In addition to being presented in the written form, literary work can also be interpreted through voice, body language and video images. Three pre-festival competitions will be held in connection with the 9th Hong Kong Literature Festival to encourage members of the public to participate in different forms of literary works.

The 9th Hong Kong Literature Festival, organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, is scheduled to be held in June and July. Three pre-festival competitions, namely the "Affectionate Discourse" Letter Writing Competition, the "Literature and Film" Short Video Competition and the Literary Performance Competition, are now inviting entries. The deadline for applications for the letter writing and short video competitions is March 20 while the Literary Performance Competition deadline is February 29.

Writing a love letter is the perfect way to express your affection. The "Affectionate Discourse" Letter Writing Competition requires participants to write a love letter on any topic in Chinese in not more than 2,000 words. Contents can vary from expressions of love for family, friendship and lovers, to the emotions of disappointment, sadness and grief. The results will be announced in June.

The letter writing competition is divided into a secondary school student category and an open category. In the secondary school student category, book coupons valued at $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 will be awarded to the champion, the first runner-up and the second runner-up respectively, and $500 book coupons will be awarded to three merit award winners. Cash rewards in the same amounts will be given to the winners in the open category.

With new technology, expressions of feelings can also be communicated through video images. The "Literature and Film" Short Video Competition, which will be held again this year, aims to encourage participants to act as director, screenwriter or actor and use the video camera to explore literary work with new interpretations.

The "Literature and Film" Short Video Competition is inviting participating teams to submit short video proposals, based on literary work by any local author, in 500 to 800 words in Chinese together with a short video 3 to 8 minutes long. Participants have to express their opinions on the selected local literary work and provide a brief summary of the video in each proposal. The results will be announced in June.

The short video competition comprises a secondary school student category and an open category. In the secondary school student category, book coupons valued at $4,000, $3,000 and $2,000 will be awarded to the champion, the first runner-up and the second runner-up respectively, and $1,000 book coupons will be rewarded to three merit award winners. Cash rewards in the same amounts will be given to the winners in the open category.

The Literary Performance Competition for primary school students, which has been well received by local schools in past years, will be held again in April. It aims to enhance the recognition and understanding of local literature through the interpretation of different literary works. The competition will be conducted in Cantonese.

Each entry can be in the format of a performance by one or two people, and the time limit is 5 minutes. Book coupons valued at $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 will be awarded to the champion, the first runner-up and the second runner-up respectively, and $500 book coupons will be awarded to three merit award winners.

Entry forms in Chinese for the above events are now available at all public libraries or on the HKPL's website at www.hkpl.gov.hk/english/ext_act/ext_act_hklf/ext_act_hklf_9_com/
