China Philharmonic Orchestra to perform with soprano Sandy Lau in upcoming concert

     The China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong) will perform several renowned Western and Chinese musical works with music director and conductor Lim Kek-han and soprano Sandy Lau next month.

     The programme will consist of four Western compositions: Rossini's "Overture: La Gazza Ladra", Bizet's "Suite L'Arlesienne", Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5" and Strauss' "The Blue Danube". In addition, the programme will also include three Chinese songs: Liu Chi's "My Motherland", Yang Ming, Jiang Chunyang and Jin Sha's "In Praise of the Red Blossoms" and Wang Xiren and Hu Shiping's "Ode to Corals" sung by soprano Sandy Lau.

     Lim Kek-han graduated with distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in Amsterdam in 1951. He represented the Netherlands three times in other countries' music forums and was the concertmaster of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra. In 1958, Lim went to the USSR as a representative of China and performed with the best-known orchestras there. Lim has resided in Hong Kong since 1971 and is well known as a local conductor.

     Renowned soprano Sandy Lau has received national acclaim for her performances, including her role as a leading actress in the National First Prize-winning full-length opera "Starlight O Starlight". She came under the tutelage of celebrated Chinese vocalists and foreign maestros, and has made a number of recordings in the Mainland including recordings for the film "A Full-length Documentary", and for the dance production "Silk-worm in Spring", which won Second Prize in the National Dance Competition. Lau has performed throughout the Mainland and in Southeast Asian countries, and has appeared on-stage alongside renowned virtuosos from the international operatic circle. She is now the concertmaster and artistic director of the New Glow Arts Troupe in Hong Kong.

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert by the China Philharmonic Orchestra (Hong Kong) will be staged at 8pm on February 26 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Yuen Long Theatre. Tickets priced at $140, $110 and $80 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
