January 2012 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available
******************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (January 19) the January 2012 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, three feature articles entitled "External Direct Investment Statistics", "Salient Features of Hong Kong's International Investment Position for the period 2001 to 2010" and "Trend in Marital Status of Hong Kong Population" are included.

"External Direct Investment Statistics"

Direct investment (DI) refers to external investment which allows an investor of an economy to have a lasting interest and a significant degree of influence or an effective voice in the management of an enterprise in another economy.

At the end of 2010, the positions of Hong Kong's inward and outward DI at market value continued to be substantial, amounting to $8,473.2 billion and $7,277.1 billion respectively.  Their ratios to Gross Domestic Product in that year were 486% and 417% respectively.

In 2010, DI inflow and outflow were $552.2 billion and $741.1 billion respectively.  Taking DI inflow and outflow together, there was a net outflow of $189.0 billion.

This feature article presents an analysis of inward and outward DI of Hong Kong for 2010, based on data obtained from the Survey of External Claims, Liabilities and Income conducted by C&SD, supplemented with data from other sources.

"Salient Features of Hong Kong's International Investment Position for the period 2001 to 2010"

International Investment Position (IIP) is a balance sheet showing an economy's stock of external financial assets and liabilities at a particular time point.  Being a highly externally oriented economy, Hong Kong is very actively engaged in activities involving cross-territory investment.  Analysis of Hong Kong's IIP is therefore particularly useful for assessing the financial soundness of the economy.

This feature article describes salient features of Hong Kong's IIP for the period 2001 to 2010.

"Trend in Marital Status of Hong Kong Population"

Marriage behaviour is a subject of interest to both demographers and the general public as it affects family formation, family composition and fertility.  It is generally believed that persons born in earlier years got married earlier in their life while marriage postponement is more common among persons born in recent years.  To ascertain such phenomenon in Hong Kong population, information on "year of current marriage" for married persons was collected in the General Household Survey during June to August 2011.  Together with relevant information related to the subject from other sources, this feature article provides an overview of the trend in marital status of Hong Kong population in the past decade.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the General Household Survey Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2887 5506).

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population; labour; external trade; business performance; housing and property; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; national income and Balance of Payments; prices; and energy.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.

Starting from the 2012 series, the print version of the HKMDS will no longer be provided.  Users can download the Digest free of charge at the website of C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/statistical_report/general_statistical_digest/index_cd_B1010002_dt_detail.jsp).
