With the opening of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Complex to members of the public tomorrow (January 11), LegCo will launch the Children's Corner, which is the first Legislature-themed education facility customised for young children.
The Secretary General of the LegCo Secretariat, Ms Pauline Ng, said that the Children's Corner aimed at building up the concept of the Legislature and the basic functions of the LegCo among young children when they were in their early childhood.
The Children's Corner, located at the Main Lobby, G/F, of the LegCo Complex, is an education activity room to provide children between the age of three and eight with a leisurely and authentic environment to experience the Legislature and learn about the basic values of a good citizen through books, and interactive games and learning kits developed by the LegCo.
"The children-friendly design of the Children's Corner creates a lively and pleasant environment to make learning an interesting experience for both the children and their family members," said Ms Ng.
In addition, during weekends, story-telling sessions will be conducted for young children and their family members. With the aid of props and visual aids, educators of the LegCo Secretariat will present a story on law-making and law-abiding, or the work of LegCo Members. Extended activities will be conducted to stimulate children's thoughts and enhance their understanding of the moral of the story.
The Children's Corner will be opened by sessions of 50 minutes each for use by members of the public from tomorrow. Children between the age of three and eight accompanied by their adult members of the family are welcome to use the service. Schools are also welcome to use the Children's Corner. The programme of the Children's Corner has been incorporated into the school visit programme of the LegCo Complex. Please refer to the above-mentioned website for more information.
The LegCo Complex is the first purpose-built accommodation for the Hong Kong Legislature. Its construction commenced in 2008 and was completed in 2011. The Complex comprises the Council Block, the Office Block and the adjoining open space. It offers conference facilities required for Council business, office accommodation for LegCo Members and staff and also a wide range of facilities for the public.
