Clustering of Norovirus at Tuen Mun Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement today (January 2):

     A total of eight patients (aged 31 to 56) and a staff member of a female Mental Handicap ward had presented with diarrhea or vomiting symptoms since December 28, 2011.  Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients.  Test results of five patients were positive, one patient was negative to Norovirus while results of the two remaining patients were still pending.  All the patients are being treated under isolation.  Seven patients were in stable condition while one was in serious condition.  The staff member concerned is on leave.

     Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward are imposed. Infection control measures of the ward concerned have been stepped up. All other patients in the ward are under close monitoring.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
