Hou Shihchieh to perform in erhu recitals

     Renowned erhu player Hou Shihchieh will give two recitals in February.

     Also featuring Bryan Lai (yangqin), Sˆmbastien Lai (zhongruan) and the Hong Kong Art of Huqin Organization, the recitals will take place at 2.30pm and 7.30pm on February 12 (Sunday) at the Xiang Hai Xuan Multi-purpose Hall, Nan Lian Garden. The programme includes the compositions "Reflections of the Moon on the Waters", "Song of a Wayfarer", "The Forlorn Drifter", "Red Decorations in Candle Light", "Tune of Hunan", "Celebrating a Bumper Harvest", "Ballad of Northern Henan", "Galloping on the Prairie", "Song of Shaking off the Feudal" and "River of Sorrow".

     Born in Taiwan, Hou Shihchieh has won a number of musicianship awards, including Taiwan's huqin solo competition and the special award and performing prize in the professional section for erhu at the 1st Art Cup International Competition of Chinese Musical Instruments in Beijing. She was also one of Shanghai's 10 Personalities of the Year in 1988.

     Hou's cross-genre talents allied with her boldly innovative, elegant style and meticulous showmanship make her an active musician and much sought-after by the music industry. Over the years, she has embarked on various touring performances, many of which have been broadcast on TV and radio. In addition to collaborating with various national orchestras, she also adapted her talent to perform electric erhu and pop music. She has appeared in many high profile events, including the "Joseph Koo and James Wong 2000 Concert" and "Golden Oldies and Classics Concert", and has also participated in studio recording for television and film productions. Her latest projects include "Beyond the Realm of Conscience", "Rosy Business" and "Shaolin".

     Erhu Recital by Hou Shihchieh is one of the programmes in the Nan Lian Garden Chinese music series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $220 (free seating) are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the Nan Lian Garden Chinese music series package. Meet-the-artist sessions (conducted in Cantonese) will be held after each performance.
