The Transport Advisory Committee (TAC) discussed today (December 20) a pilot scheme to improve cycling facilities in Tai Po and a proposal to try out advanced traffic detection technologies in Hong Kong.
The TAC Chairman, Mr Rimsky Yuen, said that the TAC was pleased to note that the Government was taking steps to enhance the provision and safety of cycle track networks and parking facilities in the new towns in the New Territories, and that a pilot scheme would be implemented in Tai Po to test the effectiveness of the various improvement measures.
"Members supported the proposal and noted that the Government would consult the Tai Po District Council and cycling associations on the proposed pilot scheme in early 2012," Mr Yuen said.
TAC members were also briefed on a proposal to try out different advanced traffic detection technologies in Hong Kong.
"Members supported the proposal and considered that the trial could explore the applicability of advanced detection technologies for collection of real-time traffic information, such as traffic speed, density and volume, for better traffic and incident management in Hong Kong," said Mr Yuen.
TAC members noted that field equipment would be installed at different locations in Hong Kong to compare and evaluate the functionality, performance and cost effectiveness of each of the detection technologies being tested under different conditions.
"The TAC believes that the results of the trial would facilitate future planning of installation of suitable field equipment for collection of real-time traffic information and dissemination of such information to the public," said Mr Yuen.
