Choral concert to praise the pursuit of peace
*********************************************

The Music Office's Youth Choir (MOYC) and Children's Choir (MOCC) will jointly perform at the "War and Peace" concert to be held at the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre Theatre at 3pm on January 8 (Sunday).

Organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, this year's annual concert will see the two choirs express their hope for peace with their beautiful singing.

Under the batons of conductors Dr Angelina Au, Stephen Ho and Yau Man-ching, the choirs will sing a variety of compositions on different aspects of war, from Verdi's "Triumphal Scene from Aida" and "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from Nabucco" to Moses Hogan's "Battle of Jericho", David Brunner's "A Song to End All War", "Go to War Song" from an Atayal tribe folk song and James Syler's "Dear Sarah".

Songs featuring peace include Mendelssohn's "Verleih uns Frieden", Kurt Bestor's "Prayer of the Children", Lois Brownsey and Marti Lunn Lantz's "Sing World Peace" and Paul Read's "Birdsong".

Established in 1980, the MOYC has 95 members with ages ranging from 15 to 25. In 2009 at the "A Voyage of Songs" International Choral Festival, the choir was awarded a gold diploma in both the Chamber Choir and Mixed Choir Open Category competitions, as well as the Category Winner Award in the Mixed Choir Open Category and the Jury Award. The MOYC has collaborated with many music groups including the reputable Bach Choir from the UK and the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra from the US. The MOYC has participated in performances staged in Singapore, Japan and Malaysia for music exchange.

Founded in 1981, the MOCC has 69 members aged from 8 to 15. The choir's recent repertoire has included both Western and Chinese choral works, including several local premieres. The choir has been invited to participate in a number of performances, including the 1999 and 2002 Hong Kong International Children's Choral Festival, a joint concert with the Macao Youth Choir (Core Juvenil de Macau) in 2007 and the "40th Anniversary Concert - HKCC & Friends" held in 2009.

Tickets priced at $60, $40 and $20 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
