Cluster of Clostridium Difficile toxin cases in TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital (WTSH) made the following announcement today (December 16):

     Six patients (four male, two female; aged between 58 and 88) in a tuberculosis and chest
ward had presented with diarrhoea symptoms since November 16. Appropriate tests had been arranged for the patients. Test results of the six patients were positive to Clostridium Difficile toxin. The concerned patients are being treated under isolation. Five of them are in stable condition and one patient is in serious condition due to other respiratory diseases.

     Admission to the representative area has been suspended and restricted visiting to the area has also been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
