Road Safety Council reminds people not to drink and drive during festive season
**********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Road Safety Council:

Members of the Road Safety Council today (December 16) distributed copies of a leaflet and souvenirs at bars and restaurants along Knutsford Terrace and Tsim Sha Tsui East as part of a campaign to increase public awareness against drink driving during Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Members of the public who had drunk alcohol at these bars and restaurants were also invited to take breath tests on the spot.  Having been shown that their alcohol level would definitely be detected if it rose to a certain level, they were convinced that random breath test is effective in combating drink driving.

Chairman of the Road Safety Campaign Committee, Dr Eric Cheng, said, "'Road Safety Guards' will help distribute the leaflets throughout the territory during the festive season.  With a distinctive image, the Guards will effectively drive home the 'If you drink, don't drive' message."

He reminded people that in addition to education and publicity efforts, a series of police operations will be mounted targeting drink driving during this festive period.  These operations will be conducted at anytime and anywhere throughout the territory.
