Speech by SCED at "Hong Kong to the World" Global Launch Ceremony (English only)
*********************************************************

Following is the speech by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, at the Global Launch Ceremony for "Hong Kong to the World" organised by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and National Geographic Channel today (December 8):

Mr (Rajesh) Sheshadri, Mr (Douglas) So, Roy (Tang), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

     Good afternoon.

I am delighted to join you today for this Global Launch Ceremony. Like all of you here, I keenly look forward to having a sneak preview of the four winning documentaries in the "Hong Kong to the World" series in a while.

I am a big fan of the documentaries produced by our RTHK colleagues. They demonstrate the in-depth research capabilities and creative presentation of our broadcasting professionals.

Bringing these qualities together with the global icon National Geographic Channel (NGC) makes this a very exciting project for our documentary makers and for our city.

I must also thank the Hong Kong Jockey Club for its valuable support of the "Hong Kong to the World" series.

Hong Kong's long and successful film history has helped bring fame and fortune to our city. And today our creative talents continue to enjoy international recognition.

This project between RTHK and NGC turns the spotlight on our city and on our filmmakers. It has given Hong Kong's gifted documentary makers the opportunity to learn from prominent executive producers and bring their productions to a world-wide audience.

But this project is not just about nurturing our film talent. Hong Kong is a diverse and vibrant city with many stories waiting to be told. Our lifestyle is built around an eclectic mix of Eastern and Western culture, old and new traditions, and natural and man-made treasures.

"Hong Kong to the World" will showcase our city in its true colours. I believe this is the best way to encourage more people to come and visit, work, study and invest in Hong Kong.

Once again, I thank RTHK and NGC for their collaboration on this project and congratulate the local filmmakers on their achievements.

American entrepreneur Nolan Bushnell once said, "Everyone who's ever taken a shower has had an idea. It's the person who gets out of the shower, dries off and does something about it who makes a difference."

So thank you for your ideas and for making a difference to our city and keep up the good work.
