Three men arrested for "Scheme $6,000" fraud
********************************************

Police today (December 8) arrested three men aged from 53 to 69 for fraud each in relation to "Scheme $6,000" (Scheme).

Police received referrals from a relevant department concerning three fraud cases early this month. The Regional Crime Unit (RCU) of Kowloon East Region took over the cases for investigation and subsequently revealed that the men had respectively registered for the Scheme from late August to mid-October on behalf of their relatives who had passed away.

Officers of RCU arrested the men in Wong Tai Sin, Ngau Tau Kok and Sau Mau Ping respectively this morning and no payments had been made.

All the arrested persons have been released on bail pending further enquiries and are required to report back to Police in late December.

Police reminded the public not to register for the Scheme on behalf of the deceased or other persons. Those submitting such registrations may violate Fraud, Section 16A of Theft Ordinance, Chapter 210 of The Laws of Hong Kong, and be subject to a maximum penalty of 14 years' imprisonment upon conviction.
