Renowned sheng player Loo Sze-wang will collaborate with local Chinese music performers to give two recitals, entitled "The LegacyˇEStories Retold", next month.
Featuring musicians including Lam Tsan-tong, Mung Mei-kwan, Tse Tsz-chung and Chiu Tan-ching, the recitals will take place at 2.30pm on January 7 (Saturday) at the Xiang Hai Xuan Multi-purpose Hall, Nan Lian Garden, and at 8pm on January 20 (Friday) at the Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall. The programme will include "Phoenix in the Sky", "Autumn Moon over a Placid Lake", "Stepping High", "The Moon over the Castle Ruins" and "Moonlight". The musicians will also perform other pieces during each performance.
A graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Loo Sze-wang has studied sheng under Chen Deren and Cheng Tak-wai. He has also taken flute lessons from Timothy Wilson and Chan Kwok-chiu. Loo is active both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, and has featured several times at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the contemporary music festival Musicarama and on Radio Television Hong Kong. Since 1983, he has played with different performing groups in various places including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, Singapore, Korea and the Mainland.
His recent performances include the premiere of the sheng concerto "Hark the Phoenix Soaring High", written by renowned composer Chan Hing-yan, at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.
"The LegacyˇEStories Retold" Sheng Recital by Loo Sze-wang is one of the programmes in the Nan Lian Garden Chinese music series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $220 (for the Nan Lian Garden performance, free seating), and $150 and $200 (Hong Kong City Hall) are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the Nan Lian Garden Chinese music series package. A meet-the-artist session (conducted in Cantonese) will be held after the Nan Lian Garden performance.
