The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) is holding an exhibition in Ngong Ping Village on the imminent waste problem facing Hong Kong and the corresponding strategies to tackle it.

The Under Secretary for the Environment, Dr Kitty Poon, and the Vice-Chairman of Islands District Council, Miss Chau Chuen-heung, visited the exhibition today (December 2). Dr Poon said, "At present, about 13 300 tonnes of waste are disposed of at landfills every day. As the three existing landfills are expected to reach capacity one by one from 2014 onwards, Hong Kong has an urgent need to tackle the waste management problem."

The exhibition highlights the importance of a multi-pronged approach to tackle the waste problem. The three main aspects are waste reduction at source and recycling, the introduction of modern technology to reduce the overall volume of waste and recover energy from waste, and the extension of landfills in a timely manner to handle non-recyclables and ash left over from the treatment process by modern facilities.

"Hong Kong should implement the multi-pronged approach as soon as possible in order to properly manage waste, and the development of Integrated Waste Management Facilities is an indispensable part of the solution," said Dr Poon.

Besides informative display panels, the exhibition also features interactive touch-screen electronic games and an Augmented Reality (AR) game that guides visitors through the main points of various strategies and also includes a demonstration of the operation of a modern incineration facility.

The exhibition is open to the public from 11am to 6pm until December 4.
