Local arts group the Nonsensemakers will stage its latest production, "The Notebook", in January.
Adapted from Hungarian writer Ágota Kristóf's novel "Le Grand Cahier" by the artistic director of the Nonsensemakers, Rensen Chan, the story starts in a city during wartime. A woman takes her twin sons to the countryside and asks her mother to take care of them. This grandma is illiterate, dirty, stingy, fierce, and a murderer.
Life is hard for the boys, and in order to survive they have to make themselves very tough. They start an incredible regime to train themselves for survival by constantly fighting, staying hungry and learning to cope with freezing conditions. They write down what happens every day in a notebook, which becomes the diary of two young rascals. As each page is turned with the passing of days, human nature in its rawest, most primitive and lustful state reveals itself.
Chan is directing the production and will lead the cast in an eerie presentation of masks and physical movements against the sand painting art of Hoi Chiu and the stirring music of Frankie Ho and Chester Wong to create a nightmarish theatre scenario that is at the same time poetic, idyllic, sensational and overwhelming. The cast includes Jo Ngai, Cheung Kwan-yu, Ko Siu-man, Lai Ching-ping and Leung Tin-chak.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "The Notebook" will be performed in Cantonese at 8pm on January 13 and 14 (Friday and Saturday) and at 3pm on January 15 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Tickets priced at $120, $160 and $220 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients. (Limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis.) Group booking discounts are also available.
