Red Star Red Army Chorus (Russia) to perform in Hong Kong
*********************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has invited The Red Star Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble (troupe) to perform in December. Under the baton of chief conductor Colonel Nikolay Rabovskiy, the troupe will perform its spectacular brand of Russian dance, military songs, traditional folk tunes and movie theme songs for local audiences.

The troupe was formed in the former USSR Strategic Missile Forces in January 1977. By 1989, the work of the troupe was no longer limited to entertaining the troops, but also included participating in arts festivals in many Russian cities. It then progressed to Moscow's top concert halls and eventually embarked on foreign tours to Switzerland, France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium and the United States. The group has also performed regularly on radio and television. Thanks to the distinctive creative nature of the ensemble, with its youthful personnel averaging just 27 years of age, the ensemble is regarded as one of the leading performing groups among Russia's armed forces.

Nikolay Rabovskiy was born in Baku, Azerbaijan and showed great interest in playing piano and singing when he was young. He graduated from the prestigious Gnesin Conservatory in Moscow, Russia. In 1981, Rabovskiy was invited to be assistant conductor of the Red Star Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble. In 2009, he was promoted to Chief Conductor of the Ensemble and given the rank of Colonel. He is currently Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Red Star Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble.
