Key statistics on business performance and operating characteristics of the industrial sector in 2010

     According to the results of the 2010 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Industrial Sector released today (November 29) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the manufacturing sector's total receipts (comprising sales and other receipts) amounted to $205.0 billion in 2010, representing an increase of 22.0% over 2009; on a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 27.1% compared with 2009 to $19.9 million in 2010.

     Operating expenses and compensation of employees of the manufacturing sector altogether amounted to $188.2 billion in 2010, representing an increase of 20.6% over 2009; on a per establishment basis, they increased by 25.6% compared with 2009 to $18.2 million in 2010.

     Gross surplus of the manufacturing sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, increased by 40.1% over 2009 to $16.9 billion in 2010; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus increased from $1.1 million in 2009 to $1.6 million in 2010.  Gross surplus accounted for 8.2% of total receipts in 2010, up by 1.1 percentage points over 2009.

     Value added of the manufacturing sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 8.8% over 2009 to $35.0 billion in 2010; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $3.4 million in 2010, which increased by 13.4% over 2009.

     The manufacturing sector comprised some 10 300 establishments and engaged about 111 500 persons, or an average of 10.8 persons per establishment, in 2010.

     Within the manufacturing sector, the four largest industry groupings in terms of value added in 2010 were (1) metal products, machinery and equipment industry; (2) food, beverages and tobacco industry; (3) paper products, printing and reproduction of recorded media industry; and (4) chemical, rubber, plastic and non-metallic mineral products industry.  They together accounted for 76.8% of the value added of the manufacturing sector.

     In the metal products, machinery and equipment industry, total receipts amounted to $98.9 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $93.2 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $2.6 billion in 2009 to $5.7 billion in 2010, accounting for 5.8% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased by 42.0% over 2009 to $9.8 billion.

     In the food, beverages and tobacco industry, total receipts amounted to $31.6 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $27.6 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $3.5 billion in 2009 to $4.0 billion in 2010, accounting for 12.8% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased by 7.7% over 2009 to $8.0 billion.

     In the paper products, printing and reproduction of recorded media industry, total receipts amounted to $18.1 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $16.0 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $1.5 billion in 2009 to $2.2 billion in 2010, accounting for 11.9% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased by 3.0% over 2009 to $5.2 billion.

     In the chemical, rubber, plastic and non-metallic mineral products industry, total receipts amounted to $17.3 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $15.1 billion in 2010.  Gross surplus increased from $1.8 billion in 2009 to $2.2 billion in 2010, accounting for 12.7% of total receipts in 2010.  Value added increased by 4.4% over 2009 to $3.7 billion.

     In addition to manufacturing establishments, the industrial sector also includes establishments engaged in mining and quarrying; electricity and gas supply; and sewerage, waste management and remediation activities.  Selected statistics for the industrial sector (except mining and quarrying), with breakdowns by major industry grouping, are shown in the attached table.

     Starting from 2010, the C&SD collected data on depreciation with a view to enhancing the quality of the statistics on operating cost.  The corresponding results will be published in the report "Key Statistics on Business Performance and Operating Characteristics of the Industrial Sector in 2010".
