Update on Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Caritas Medical Centre

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding the announcement yesterday that a number of inpatients were found to be Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers, a spokesperson for Caritas Medical Centre (CMC) made the following update today (November 18):

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, screening of contacts has been performed. Another four male patients (aged 81-91) were confirmed as carriers of VRE today. Their clinical condition is stable and they are under medical surveillance and isolation.

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures in the wards concerned and the situation will be closely monitored.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
