Hospital Authority response to Caritas Medical Centre investigation report

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority (HA) made the following statement following the release of the investigation report on a blood transfusion incident at Caritas Medical Centre (CMC) today (November 9):

     The HA Head Office has received the investigation report from CMC and will study the report in detail.  To prevent recurrence of similar incident, the HA will ensure the early implementation of the measures recommended by CMC.  The HA will also review the current pilot installation of the automated blood bank analyzer in United Christian Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital for its effectiveness in preventing similar incidents.  The review will serve as a useful reference in considering the progressive introduction of the system in other hospital clusters.

     The HA has extended its apology and regards to the patient and her family. CMC has been required to provide adequate follow-up support to the patient.  At the same time, healthcare professionals of public hospitals are reminded to strictly adhere to the stringent protocol and guidelines of blood grouping to ensure patient safety.
