EPD to hold exhibitions on switching off idling engines
*******************************************************

With the statutory requirement for drivers to switch off idling engines due to take effect by the end of this year, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) will hold a series of roving exhibitions to enhance public understanding of the provisions of the related legislation, the Motor Vehicle Idling (Fixed Penalty) Ordinance.

The Ordinance is expected to come into operation on December 15 this year. The new law will require drivers to switch off the engines of stationary vehicles in order to help reduce their environmental nuisance value and improve roadside air quality, a spokesman for the EPD said today (November 2).

He said the roving exhibitions aim to raise public awareness and understanding of the requirement to switch off idling engines, so that the community, and drivers in particular, can prepare for its introduction.

To promote the green driving practice, the exhibitions will focus on the requirements of the Ordinance and also highlight the environmental and health impacts caused by idling engines and the advantages of switching them off.

Apart from descriptive and pictorial display panels and pamphlets, a public announcement for TV will also be on display. Visitors will also be able to enjoy interactive multimedia games and a game booth, which will add fun to the exhibitions.

Members of the public are cordially invited to visit the roving exhibitions, which will be held across Hong Kong between November 2011 and January 2012 and will be open to the public from noon to 8pm. Details of the exhibitions in November are listed below. The exhibitions will move to other venues afterwards.
