The Hong Kong Space Museum's latest Omnimax show, "Wired to Win: Surviving the Tour de France", will commence screening next Wednesday (November 2) and will run until April 30, 2012.
Following the exciting race alongside the riders, the Omnimax show will let viewers understand how the riders are mentally prepared to manage the different conditions encountered in the race, and how they overcome difficulties with their perseverance, making full use of the potential of their bodies and minds as they strive for victory.
The premiere of the show was held today (October 29). The Deputy Secretary of the Hong Kong Cycling Association, Mr Hung Chung-yam, and the gold medal winner of the men's track cycling points race at the 9th National Games, Mr Ho Siu-lun, were invited to the premiere and a sharing session entitled "The Training of a Cyclist", during which they talked about their daily life and experiences of training provided to professional cyclists.
As a large-scale bicycle road race with a century-long history, the Tour de France is best known for its gruelling nature and thereby attracts the top cycling teams from all over the world. Held each year in July, the Tour takes place in France and sometimes near the border with neighbouring countries. During the three-week race, riders have to finish more than 3,000 kilometres, climb 3,000-metre-high mountains and endure hot weather in southern France. On average, a cyclist has to complete 180 kilometres every day.
Showing the life stories of Jimmy Caspar and Baden Cooke, who took part in the Tour de France, the show tells how riders respond to different conditions in the race and manage various risks with the help of their brains. Weaving together the cyclists' experiences and description of the brain in action, the show enables the audience to learn more about the structure and function of the brain as a vital part of the human body.
The audience will follow the leading group, coming to the last charge for the line, and witness the success that hinges on whether the riders can bring the potential of their brains into full play to win the race.
The 45-minute Omnimax show "Wired to Win: Surviving the Tour de France" will be screened daily at 3.50pm and 7.20pm at the Hong Kong Space Museum's Stanley Ho Space Theatre. There will be additional screenings at 12.20pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The museum is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays).
Tickets are available at the Hong Kong Space Museum Box Office and at all URBTIX outlets for $24 (front stalls) and $32 (stalls). Full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 or above and people with disabilities are entitled to a half-price concession.
To tie in with the show, the bicycle that local cyclist Mr Wong Kam-po used in the men's scratch race in track cycling at the World Championships in 2007, as well as the rainbow jersey that was awarded to him when he won the gold medal of the race and he was authorised to reproduce will be displayed in the Space Museum during the show period.
