Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases at Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding the announcement earlier that there were patients found to be Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers, the spokesperson of Queen Elizabeth Hospital made the following update today (October 27):

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, screening of contacts has been performed. Today, one male patient was confirmed as a carrier of VRE and two male patients were shown to be probable carriers of VRE according to preliminary laboratory tests during contact tracing. All of them (aged 34 to 65) are without clinical symptoms. One of them has been discharged, and the remaining two patients are in stable condition and under isolation.

     The hospital will continue the stepped-up infection control measures and the situation will be closely observed.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
