Under the batons of acclaimed conductors Chen Ning-chi, Alfred Wong, Chan Chiu-yin and Tse Kim-fei, the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra, also featuring Jinghu and Gaohu soloist Wong Lok-ting, will perform "A Concert of Chinese Music of Hong Kong" in November.
A delightful range of compositions selected for the concert includes "Swaying Coconut Palms Dance Suite", "Scenes of Yunnan", "Winter", "Dai-Lok-Tin" and "Song of the Sea". Jianh and Gaohu soloist Wong Lok-ting will play "Farewell My Concubine" and "Music from the Southern".
During his illustrious career, Chen Ning-chi has twice been invited to guest conduct the Singapore Chinese Orchestra. In the Composers' Festival of Hong Kong organised by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, a concert was dedicated to his works entitled "The Battle of Chibi ¡V Chen Ning-chi", at which his symphonic poem "The Battle of Chibi" was premiered in 2010. In July the same year, he conducted the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in the family concert, "The Panda's Diary". In November, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts' Academy Chinese Orchestra performed his works in a concert that Chen himself guest conducted. In March 2011, he was invited to guest conduct the Chinese Orchestra of the National University of Singapore at a concert featuring all of his works.
Wong Lok-ting graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Bachelor's degree in Music in 2001. Wong joined the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in 2006 and is currently Acting Assistant Gaohu Principal. She has been studying for a Master's degree in gaohu under Yu Qiwei at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts since 2010. Her erhu can be heard on soundtrack recordings of many period costume dramas, the most popular being "Rosy Business", "Beyond the Realm of Conscience", and "Can't Buy Me Love".
Alfred Wong has composed and arranged more than a hundred pieces and his music has been performed worldwide, including the USA, UK, Germany, Sweden, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Taiwan and Macao. He has twice been awarded scholarships by the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong. His recent commissions include "The Eight Immortals' Adventures", jointly presented by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Repertory theatre.
Chan Chiu-yin graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University and Hong Kong Institute of Education with a Bachelor of Education degree and a Certificate of Music Teaching respectively. He is now studying for a Master of Musicology degree at the Central Conservatory of Music. He is currently Director of the Windpipe Chinese Ensemble, an honorary committee member of the China Dizi Society, an honorary executive committee member of the Guangdong Dizi Society, Vice President of the Hong Kong Chinese Instrumental Association, an executive member of the Hong Kong Bamboo Flue Society, Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra, and Conductor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Students' Union Chinese Orchestra.
During his career to date, Tse Kim-fei has served as Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra and the Academy Chinese Orchestra, and has performed in Southeast Asia and the United Kingdom with the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra and the Academy Chinese Music Ensemble. He has also performed at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong Youth Music Festival, Government House concerts, Hong Kong Film Awards, the opening ceremony of Tsing Ma Bridge, and in CD records and TV commercials.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "A Concert of Chinese Music of Hong Kong" by the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra will be held at 4pm on November 27 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Kwai Tsing Theatre. Tickets priced at $160, $140 and $110 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and the minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
