Centre for Food Safety launches mobile application Nutrition Calculator (with photos)
************************************************************

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (October 23) launched a mobile application (app), "Nutrition Calculator" ("NuCal"), to help people make better food choices by using nutrition information on prepackaged food any time, anywhere.

A spokesman for the CFS said, "'NuCal' is a mobile app version of an internet tool 'Nutrition Label Widget' rolled out by the CFS earlier. 'NuCal' is one of the items to promote the Nutrition Labelling Scheme which is now effective.

"'NuCal' enables people to set up their personal food database and search for their favourite prepackaged food items. Besides, after inputting the amount of food consumed, the estimated levels of nutrient intake can be worked out. Users can then compare them with the upper limits of daily intake and make appropriate adjustments as necessary."

The spokesman added, "Through saving their food intake history, users can check the levels of nutrient intake of different foods. That makes it easier for them to choose food which suits them."

"NuCal" is available in Traditional and Simplified Chinese, and English. The app, which operates on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, can now be downloaded free of charge from the App Store.

The app can be found at the App Store by searching for any of the following keywords - "nucal", "cfs" or "nutrition calculator". Users may also make use of the attached Quick Response (QR) Code to download the app.

Details of the app are available at the CFS' dedicated website: www.nutritionlabel.gov.hk. Please contact CFS by email (rc@fehd.gov.hk) in case there are queries in using the app.
