Young inmates of the Correctional Services Department (CSD)'s Lai King Correctional Institution (LKCI) were today (October 19) presented with academic and vocational certificates at a ceremony in recognition of their achievements.

Fifty-five inmates, among whom 25 had been discharged from the institution, obtained a total of 90 distinctions and 57 passes in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, the City and Guilds Examinations, the LCCI International Qualifications Examinations and examinations organised by the Clothing Industry Training Authority.

They achieved good results in Chinese and English computer applications, bookkeeping, sewing practice, fundamental pattern construction, beauty care, retail services and clerical training, and food and beverage service.

Speaking at the certificate presentation ceremony, the Chairman of Pok Oi Hospital, Mr Henry Tong, said the good results reflected inmates' perseverance and determination in the pursuit of self-enhancement.

He also praised the CSD for its tireless efforts in providing suitable education and vocational training to inmates as well as setting up relevant educational subsidies schemes and funds to encourage them to continuously equip themselves and obtain recognised qualifications through open examinations.

Mr Tong said, "CSD has kept pace with the development of the New Senior Secondary curriculum by upgrading its education programme. More resources and education kits are also provided to inmates so that they can have better options in further education and employment after release."

Also taking part in the ceremony were parents of inmates, representatives of community organisations and celebrities.

Situated at 16 Wa Tai Road, Kwai Chung, LKCI is a minimum security institution established in May 2008. It has a capacity of 200 penal places for young female offenders aged from 14 to under 21.

The department provides half-day compulsory education programmes and half-day vocational training for young offenders under the age of 2l. Guidance and assistance are also in place for adult offenders who participate in studies on a voluntary basis.
