Miranda Chin Dance Company will stage "The Highest State of Good - Water" to open the Way of Dance Series in November.
"The Highest State of Good - Water" is a multi-media dance theatre production that showcases an interplay between rhythm, visual arts and live music in its performance. The work's main line of creative development is based on the observation in Lao Zi's "Daodejing", the most supreme of Chinese classics, that "the highest state of good resembles water". The production uses elements of Tai Chi and Laban dynamic rhythms to show how water is the source of life. Water has a naturally beneficent and non-contentious disposition, the dance company notes, adding that the highest state of good hence uses water to exemplify "the way", in turn allowing for a higher level of symbolism. The dancers use water and "the way" as themes for exploring, experiencing and tasting life with a dynamic rhythm that embodies the intertwined relationship between things and the self.
"The Highest State of Good - Water", a local production that places equal emphasis on the traditional ways of interpretation and contemporary creativity, is created and choreographed by Miranda Chin, with music directed by composer Chan Ming-chi. For this production, Chin visited Mount Wudang in Central China to study "the way".
The Way of Dance series is the latest offering from the company, following their previous production of the Chinese Martial Arts Dance series. It is a dance work with "the way" as its main line of creative development and depicting nature as the source for discerning the wisdom of life.
Founded in 1989, Miranda Chin Dance Company is dedicated to promoting Chinese dance. Its vitality lies both in creativity and endeavours to open up new horizons by blending the essence of Chinese dance, aspiring to reflect the uniqueness of Hong Kong culture in modern dance. Credits include "Innovative Chinese Rhythms & Movements", "Calligraphy Fantasia", "Four Seasons" and "Chinese Martial Arts Dance", which received high acclaim. The company has been invited to perform at various arts festivals held in the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Korea. It also performed in the cultural spectacular celebrating the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "The Highest State of Good - Water" will be performed at 8pm from November 25 to 26 (Friday to Saturday) at the Theatre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre. Tickets priced at $150 and $180 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients. (Limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis.) Group booking discounts are also available.
